There are compelling solutions available for even the hardest materials. Panasonic’s fiber laser markers in particular are destined to impress in tool making applications thanks to their power and ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions. This makes the LP-S series especially well-suited for high-speed marking and deep engraving of metal. These types of methods come into play in the manufacturing and labeling of gears, connecting pieces, chains, fittings, drill bits, as well as medical instruments. Black marking, for which Panasonic has developed their first-class Laser Marking Systems, also plays a key role in the toolmaking industry.

  • Black marking on HSS drill

    For high-speed steel drills, black marking is best suited because only a burr-free marking can ensure a precise rotation of the drill without any deviations. For this purpose Panasonic has developed a special laser marking system, the LP-SW. The marking results in an excellent surface quality and is not subject to wear and tear. This way, the longevity of the marking and the identification of the drill can be achieved.

    The end mills from Alpen Maykestag are labeled with a robust and permanent black marking.

    The advantage of the laser marking method is its cost effectiveness: Immediately after the production process, the product can be forwarded to the marking operation. Panasonic’s high-quality CO2 laser markers are designed for industrial applications subject to particularly high demands in terms of speed and functionality. When machining and labeling PET bottles, packaging bags or rubber seals, you will usually be dealing with high production line speeds. As used in the packaging industry, our Laser Marking Systems come equipped with an encoder interface. This makes it possible to perform marking on-the-fly at line speeds of up to 240 m/min. It is also possible to synchronize the marking and flying speed.

  • "On-the-fly" marking on PET bottles

    The packaging industry is characterized by high throughput rates and fast moved objects. With our on-the-fly function we can meet the requirements of these industries. Thanks to the laser marking technique, PET bottles get a contact-free marking without mechanical stress. Due to its somewhat shorter wavelength of 9.3 µm, the LP-400 series is ideal for marking clear plastics such as PET or PC.

    Packaging varies considerably in form and contains many different types of information which is difficult or uneconomical to print with standard printing methods. Examples are expiration dates, batch and serial numbers as well as brand logos and graphics. The use of a Panasonic Laser Marker offers the possibility to individually design the packaging.

    The pharmaceutical industry prescribes an outer packaging according to the UDI-GS1 standard (Unique Device Identification). During production, a colored layer is applied to the cardboard boxes, which can then be removed individually by a laser marking system. The important point is that the laser has to execute the removing operation in such a high speed that the speed of the packing machine need not be reduced. Such applications typically are realized in on-the-fly mode.

Not only in industries such as automotive, electronics, toolmaking and pharmaceuticals: We identify the right solution for almost any conceivable application. Precision work is in demand in applications like the machining of jewelry, watches, medals and coins, as well as the manufacture of chain sprockets for cycling and high-security applications like personalizing ID cards, passports and credit cards. Our established custom solutions also include LTF-C- technology (Laser Transfer Film Contrast), which emerged from a collaborative project we carried out with tesa to develop permanent glass marking solutions.     The marking of films and labels predominantly comes into play if no direct marking on workpieces is possible. Typical multilayer films are marked by a laser and finally cut with the laser; this is called "kiss cutting". With this kiss-cut method the carrier film remains intact.

  • Laser marking on aluminum electrodes

    This metal oxide varistor has a high energy absorption capacity and is therefore used as a surge protector in the medium and high voltage technology. Its black body consists of electroceramic material. The front electrodes which are to be marked consist of evaporated aluminum. The thickness of the layer is between 70 and 100µm. The challenge was to choose the laser parameters in such a way that the material abrasion is less than 40µm on the one hand and that a high-contrast marking is achieved on the other hand. Another challenge is to not damage the black main body by the laser radiation. In collaboration with our client we have been able to reach this goal after extensive preliminary examinations and analysis.

  • Mechanical locking system with laser engraving

    The company Aug. Winkhaus GmbH & Co. KG attaches great importance to the quality of its products. To achieve a unique identification, the company marks its locking systems with a Laser Marker from Panasonic. The selective removal of material from the product surface by laser radiation creates a permanent and high-contrast laser engraving.

This marking method removes layers of material and makes depressions in the surface. Due to the very high power density of the laser radiation, local vaporization or melt expulsion occurs. Even very hard metallic materials or ceramics can be marked permanently with this marking method. The depression depth can be controlled via processing parameters. Engravings are not subject to wear and tear. For this reason, the method is commonly used for parts subject to abrasion or during anticorrosive treatments of coated parts.

Annealing

Annealing Annealing

Metals like stainless steels or titanium are locally heated by the laser, which results in changes to the microstructure and the creation of an oxide layer. These two factors generate a colored marking. Depending on the temperature and thickness of the oxide layer, this method creates different colors like yellow, green, red, blue and even black. Black marking achieves the highest contrast, is not subject to wear and tear, and the surface remains absolutely smooth since no material is removed. This marking method is always used where the surface must not be damaged, i. e. for surgical instruments, ball bearings, and hydraulic cylinders.

Foaming

Foaming Foaming

The marking method of foaming is only possible with certain synthetic materials. The laser beam locally melts the synthetic material and due to the vaporization of the carbons and additives, small gas bubbles are formed which foam up the synthetic material. The cooling rate is sufficiently high to firmly enclose the bubbles. This way, a raised marking is produced. The incident light is diffusely reflected in this "foam" and the marking appears bright and with high contrasts on dark resins.

Carbonization is a thermochemical reaction that breaks up carbon compounds to release carbon. Carbonization is used for bright resins and organic materials (paper, cardboard, wood and leather) where the color effect to be achieved is from bright to dark.

This marking method acts as an indirect marking of coated materials, i. e. anodized aluminum, laser marking films, and painted base materials. The laser beam removes the already applied covering layers by vaporization and the base materials become visible again, which leads to the marking effect. This marking method is frequently used in applications of the automotive industry to produce a day/night design of dashboards : through the removal of the layers of varnish the user symbols are applied on backlit, translucent resins. Another application is the marking of laser marking films to create self-adhesive labels. During this process, the laser beam cannot only be used for marking, but also for cutting the film.

    How does the laser welding process work?

    Plastic layers can be welded together by laser emission and heat build-up at the adjacent surfaces without the need for adhesives. The laser beam passes through the laser transparent (upper) material and then is absorbed by the laser absorbing (lower) material.
    The laser-absorbing material heats up and melts together with the laser-transparent material by heat transmission. During welding, a joining pressure adapted to the needs of the workpiece supports a precise junction of the plastic components.

    Which advantages does laser welding offer?

    Laser welding is a clean and precise process in which the plastic components can be joined without visible welding seams. The individual process steps can be monitored and documented completely and are therefore useful for the quality control.
    During the laser welding process, the workpieces do not rub against each other as normally in other welding processes. This means that no wear particles are produced, which subsequently could influence the part properties in a negative way. Furthermore, during laser welding the joining parts can be connected without any additional materials such as adhesives or bonding sheets.
    The laser welding process is especially suited if the inner electronic parts of a component have to be protected against dust and humidity.

    Highlights of the Panasonic VL-W1

    The new VL-W1 laser welding system is based on the unique optical fiber technology of Panasonic. The technology has been adapted from the tested and proven Panasonic laser marking systems and has been adapted for the welding of plastics. This technology
    realizes a parallel laser beam with minimal beam widening. This allows working on different planes and enables a precise laser beam emission even very close to the edge of parts, which may encourage manufacturers to look for possible savings even in the part design.

    Today's industry cannot do without traceability. Traceability means that at any given time it must be possible to find out when, where, and by whom a product was manufactured, processed, stored, transported, consumed, or scrapped.

    It is increasingly common that manufacturers use 2D codes like Data Matrix codes for tracing products. 2D codes can store a large amount of data and offer higher flexibility when it comes to positioning them somewhere on the product.     Direct part marking (DPM)
    An additional highlight is the fact that DPM codes can be read, too. Direct Part Marking (DPM) ensures the traceability of a product over its complete life cycle. All important data from the serial number to the production date are no longer printed on a base material (e.g. a white label), but are directly marked on the product itself. This is where the Laser Markers from Panasonic enter the stage. They create the basis and means for permanent marking and reliable product identification even under the most difficult of conditions.     Once the product has been labeled with the high-quality mark, it is possible to read the DPM code. For this purpose Panasonic has developed the new 2D Code Reader from the LP-ABR10 series – together with the Laser Marker this is an all-in-one system.

    A reliable product labeling to ensure the traceability of medical and pharmaceutical products is standard today. In the next three years, stricter UDI regulations will take effect in Europe and the number of exceptions will be reduced drastically. This enormously increases the demands on the quality management.

    It will not be enough to mark labels and packagings because also the reusable products of class II and class III need to have a UDI-compliant direct marking. An unreadable marking can have severe consequences either for the patient or for the manufacturer.

    Why is a product verification necessary?

    The verification of medical products includes a comparison of the product data on the packaging with a corresponding database entry. The following checks are performed:

    • Does the record exist and does it match the data on the packaging (protection against product forgery)
    • Has the record been marked as already “prescribed”
    • Does the record contain warnings (i. e. call backs)

    A product, respectively the primary packaging, has to be uniquely identifiable from the manufacturing process to the medication.

     

    These challenges can be mastered with a precise and durable laser marking. Since 2009 the Panasonic Laser Marking Systems have been proving themselves through their excellent quality and high speeds not only in Europa, but also and especially in Japan.     Securing an optimum marking process

    Why is product marking particularly effective with laser?

    The laser radiation of a Panasonic Laser Marking System is a very precise and clean tool. You can use it for the different material types of the pharmaceutical industry: it is suited for the marking on glass containers, ampoules, syringes, outer carton package, blister packages, resin coverages and aluminum packagings.

    All relevant information such as manufacturing date, batch number, expiry date, and many other variables can be applied on many different kinds of material with continuous quality. For the product marking no masks, print forms and cutting tools are necessary. The information to be marked is transferred directly from a computer-based system to the Laser Marking System. This way, the real time data of products can be marked quickly and flexibly.

    The whole product information can be encrypted and marked also in the form of a bar code (e.g. QR Code, Data Matrix, GS1-RSS, CODE 128) and hence are identifiable only by the original manufacturer.

    CO2 laser for cartons and outer packages or fiber laser for plastic covers, vial caps and medical instruments?
    The laser marking fulfills all basic hygienic prerequisites of the medical technology. Surfaces of medical instruments can be marked free from burrs, grooves and material residues.

     

    Glass marking - an innovative solution of Panasonic & tesa

    The patented LTF-C technology (laser transfer film contrast) is perfectly suited for glass marking. A very legible and high-contrast glass marking can be realized.

    For medical manufacturers: Primary glass packagings like syringes, vial caps, ampoules, or cartridges can be marked properly and permanently with the LTF-C technology. Besides an extraordinary readability and a high graphic resolution even with smallest markings, the LTF-C technology offers a very high mechanical durability. In this process the glass neither is affected by UV light nor by chemicals and cleaning processes.

    Work on roofs and special installation works are among the jobs susceptible to the greatest risk of falling. The risk of falling is the critical factor when working on roofs. Wearing personal protective equipment is indispensable in this regard, and is prescribed by law. Fall protection equipment must be properly inspected on a regular basis by specialized personnel. For large-scale protection systems, however, such inspections can be very laborious.

    Unique identification through laser marking

    If defects are identified, the attachment points in question must be uniquely identified and documented. Thanks to the laser marking of individual serial numbers on lifting eyes and other ABS Safety GmbH products, unique identification no longer poses a problem. The markings significantly facilitate the documentation of installation and testing.

    The company uses a Panasonic LP-Z series Laser Marking System to do so.
